Tasting notes

Big and Rich with flavors of black and white pepper, mineral spices and dark cocoa present a truly complex and intense wine fabulous now, but even more amazing with age.

Production notes

In 2010, the temperatures were unseasonably warm, ripening the fruit beautifully, giving the wine more intense pepper, spice and fruit characteristics.

Clive Pursehouse gives our 2010 Syrah an exelent review. Click here to read the entire article.

Hi-Valley Vineyard is located in The Dalles, OR and managed by Lonnie Wright. This vineyard has been the bedrock for JW’s Syrah and Merlot over the past 10 years. Originally developed by Dry Hollow vineyard—Brad’s first venture, which morphed into JW—this vineyard exhibits very unique fruit characters, unlike any other in the region: expansive fruit, cranberry nuances with a penchant for very big wines with great texture and mouthfeel. One of the standards that defines JW. Planted between 1999 and 2001 at 500 feet, adjacent to the Bailey family's Hi Valley cherry orchard. Although the temperature in The Dalles is typically hot and dry in the summer, this vineyard seems to stay uniquely cool for the area.

John Haw’s experience started with Warner Vineyards and Leelanau Cellars in Michigan back in 1972. As his career blossomed he ventured to Oregon where his family was from, landing him at Shafer Vineyars in Forest Grove for his first introduction to Oregon wines. He continued on to Sokol Blosser for 11 years, which led him to Pedroncelli in Dry Creek California and finally he found his way to the Columbia Gorge, first working for Maryhill and then finding his home with Jacob Williams. He believes the Columbia Gorge has the BEST wine growing region in the nation.

John carefully hand-selects each vineyard and allows the vineyards to dictate what the style will be. Aging his wines for up to 36 months, John’s experience and dedication continues to produce premium award-winning wines year after year.
